Welsh Art News
SPRING 2008

New Stock

I am pleased to be able to offer an interesting and varied selection of new pictures and objects this spring - spanning the late 18th to the late 19th century.

Of particular interest is the fascinating painting on porcelain of The Last Bard - one of the great romantic images of Welsh visual culture (full details available). I am also glad to show a charming example of the work of the early Welsh portrait painter John Downman, a contemporary of William Parry.

From south Wales comes the fine silver Abergavenny Eistoddfod medal of 1838, presented by the famous Lady Charlotte Guest as a prize for the best Welsh Wool, and the historically important view of old Swansea market painted in 1895. This is not only full of charming detail of the market stalls and figures but also records the appearance of a part of the city that has long been swept away.

The Coombe Tennant Collection

Currently on display at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth (until 24 March) is a large and well-curated exhibition of paintings from the previously little known Coombe Tennant Collection. This was formed by Winifred Coombe Tennant who lived near Neath and is probably the finest private collection of Welsh art put together in the 20th century. The exhibition includes fine works by Evan Walters, Kyffin Williams and Gwen John, amongst many others. The collection is unusual and all the more interesting because its context was fully recorded in Mrs Coombe Tennants diaries. Peter Lord curated the exhibition and he has written a superb catalogue to accompany it.

This Exhibition is highly recommended to all those interested in art collecting in Wales and particularly to those interested in 20th century Welsh painting.

New Book
The Life and Works of William Parry A.R.A. (1743-1791)

I have been engaged in the crucial proof reading stage for some time but this is now complete and this important book will be printed in the next few weeks. It will be launched in Wales at Peniarth on 8 March 2008 and will be
widely available thereafter. Full details will be posted on this website and a notice will be sent out nearer the time.
