The New Stock

I am very pleased to be able to offer an excellent group of early 19th century Welsh pictures in the current stock update. These include the very unusual panel painting of the arms of Wales (as borne by the medieval princes of Gwynedd) supported by the dragon of Wales (as borne by Owain Glyndwr) and with the motto ‘Cymru fy ngwlad” (Wales, my country). I have not seen this unusual combination of patriotic elements in one painting before.

This update is strong on portraiture with newly-discovered works by Parry, Hughes and Roos. The Parry is a fine example, being of an unknown gentleman whose white waistcoat may indicate membership of the Cycle of the White Rose. The Roos is a classic of its type and the Hughes is a particularly good find given the infrequency with which his work now comes to market and the strength of the imagery of the harpist in Welsh portraiture. The French neo-classical painter Colin’s powerful rendition of The Last Bard is a clear indicator of the power of this classic Welsh image in the early 19thc. imagination.

Lastly, I am pleased to offer the dimunitive antiquarian oak corner cupboard from Nercwys Hall, Flintshire. This should find a ready home in any old Welsh house.
