SUMMER
2008
New
Stock.
The
latest additions to stock include some of the most interesting
works that have appeared on the website for some time,
particularly paintings by several important Welsh artisan
painters of the mid-19th century. This is a reflection
of the vagaries of the art market as such artisan pictures
have been few and far between in recent years - the John
Cambrian Rowland is the first work by
this rare painter ever to come into my stock and the Wm.
J Chapman is only the second sporting subject
to appear here in over ten years. In addition to these
rarities are two highly characteristic portraits by the
celebrated William
Roos
whose work is increasingly hard to find.
The
new stock also includes several quirky and early Welsh
rarities such as the rare caricature of A
Welsh Justice, the circular
meeting list of the Welsh Jacobite society
- The Cycle of the White Rose, and the Swansea
stokers snuff tin.
Amongst the more conventionally historically interesting
paintings are the fascinating early
panorama of Barmouth as it appeared
in 1797 and the fine early 20th c. view of the town of
Harlech
by Frederick Marriott.
Finally,
another rarity makes an appearance in the form of the
charming scene of Boys
Fishing by James Parry. Parry came from a family
of painters of Welsh descent living in Manchester. Although
he is known to have exhibited a number of pictures at
the Manchester Royal Institution during his lifetime,
(including this one in 1831), his work is very rare.

PARRY - The Life and Works of William Parry A.R.A. (1743-1791)
My monograph on Parry, the first thorough study of his
life and paintings, was
launched at Peniarth near Tywyn on 8 March. Since then
it has been selling steadily and I have been extremely
gratified by the numerous kind and encouraging messages
received from both private clients and the trade.
The
launch was accompanied by a double-page article in the
North Wales Daily Post and articles about the book have
also appeared in the Cambrian News, the Western Maiil
and the Antiques Trade Gazette.
The
first formal review appears in the May & June edition
of Cambria magazine. In a very favourable article, PARRY
is described as well written and beautifully produced.

Further
reviews are expected soon in Planet (the Welsh Internationalist),
Barn, the British Art Journal, the Journal of the Merioneth
Historical and Record Society and the Georgian Group Journal.
Details will appear in further updates to this website.
