Miles
Wynn Cato
is
the leading specialist dealer in pre-20th century
Welsh
art. Following a degree in history from Cambridge University
he learnt the art trade as gallery manager with David
Ker Fine Art in London. Following another two years with
Simon Dickinson Ltd, one of the worlds leading Old Master
and Modern picture dealers, he set up his own gallery
in Lower Sloane Street in 1995.
Miles Wynn Cato is half Welsh by birth, his mother being
a Nanney-Wynn from Meirionnydd. His abiding interest in
his Welsh ancestry encouraged him to start collecting
Welsh pictures while still at school and upon starting
a career as an art dealer in the mid-1980s he began to
deal actively in this long neglected area.
The
main emphasis of the business has always been on historically
interesting images which convey something of the fascinating
history and spirit of Wales and the Welsh people. Works
by the great Welsh artists of the 18th century such as
Richard Wilson, William Parry and Moses Griffith are keenly
sought out as are those from the 19th century by painters
such as Penry Williams, Hugh Hughes and William Roos.
Works stocked include portraits of literary, political
& gentry figures, topographical pictures depicting areas
of landscape or buildings in Wales many of which have
been often changed beyond all recognition and drawings
and prints covering many Welsh subjects. Given this remit
the range of pictures is very broad and gallery stock
is as likely to include an early-19th century pencil sketch
of a Welsh country house for £200 as a fine portrait in
oils of a Welsh squire for £10,000. The scarcity of such
items means the number of pictures held at any one time
is usually small but Miles Wynn Cato is constantly searching
for new acquisitions and he has established a broad private
and institutional client base, both in Wales and beyond.
With detailed records of clients' particular interests,
whether they relate to particular Welsh families or areas
of the country, new finds can be offered as soon as they
are located. Increasingly, the gallery also handles pictures
of more general Welsh interest including good examples
of landscape painting from all periods as well as some
interesting Welsh artefacts such as historical manuscripts,
armorial porcelain and sealed wine bottles. For a survey

Miles
Wynn Cato also offers a broad range of related services
including bidding at auction, valuations, historical research
and the location of specific works of art. Periodical
lists of new stock are issued to those on the gallery
mailing list and we are always pleased to make contact
with interested collectors on an informal basis.
